Question by James: My leather dog leash broke, Whats the best tie or knot or braid to fix it without making it to short?
So I just bought a $ 40 leather leash, its almost a inch long or it is by 6 feet. It broke almost in the middle 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 feet. I don’t want or have the cash to buy another leather leash, he has a leather collar and I really like them to be the same plus I like how they look and I have a lot of faith that they are not going to brake. I have a Pit Bull and I need a leash that a believe isn’t going to break. So what is the best way to tie it back together without losing any of the lengthiness and so you cant tell that it has been tied back together. As i was thinking about it, I was thinking maybe it would be a good idea to cut down the leash through the middle on both ends so I could like braid it back together or something. If i cut down through the middle of the leash on both sides like 6 or 8 inches then I could use those inches to make the tie, knot, or braid so I don’t lose any of the length of the leash. I also don’t want to walk around and everybody that looks at my dog and me will notice a big knot on my leash and think that i am to cheap to buy a new leash for my dog. I know there is a ton of different knots and braids and such and i Know there is experts on this subject. I appreciate any of the help that you can give me. Thank you very much

Is this a flat, one piece leather leash? What I would do is trim the ends where it broke so it was nice and flat and not ragged looking. I’d then over lap them about 2 inches and rivet and sew them together, one on top of the other. It would be strong and not really noticeable. I know you probably don’t have the tools to do this repair, but do you have a shoe repair shop in your town? Or a saddle or tack maker? Another good place to check is an upholstery shop too. If you call around and ask, I bet you could find a place that would help you cheaply.
I’ve done a lot of leather braiding, and I can’t think of a good way to braid that back together. Even if there is a way, you will lose at least half of the length.
